Kettling — rumbling like a kettle
A deep rumble or "kettle about to boil" noise is classic kettling: limescale or sludge has built up on the heat exchanger, water gets trapped against the hot surface, and it boils where it shouldn't. It's the noise we'd take most seriously over time, because it steadily damages the heat exchanger — one of the most expensive parts in the boiler. Banging
Where and when the bang happens matters. A single bang or thump right as the boiler fires can mean delayed ignition — a small amount of gas building up before it lights. Treat that one with respect: stop firing the boiler and get it looked at rather than letting it keep happening. Banging or knocking from pipework a while after the heating comes on is usually far more benign — pipes expanding against joists or clips — and banging combined with poor circulation can also be air moving through the system.
Gurgling
Gurgling means air or water where it shouldn't be: trapped air in radiators or pipework, or — in freezing weather — condensate backing up behind a frozen external pipe. Otherwise, bleeding any radiators that are cold at the top is the sensible first step.
Humming or vibrating
A constant hum or vibration that wasn't there before often points to the pump — running fast, wearing bearings, or vibrating against its mounting. Sometimes it's simply the pump speed set higher than the system needs. Either way it's a straightforward thing for an engineer to check, and far cheaper to sort early than after the pump fails outright.
Tapping or ticking
A gentle tick-tick as the heating warms up or cools down is usually just thermal expansion — metal pipework growing and shrinking against its fixings. Annoying if it's under a bedroom floor, but rarely a fault. If tapping is new, loud, or paired with any other symptom, it's worth mentioning when you call.
