Ariston boilers are a familiar sight in Birmingham homes — often fitted where space or budget mattered, and generally capable units when they're looked after. They're also a brand some general repair firms shy away from, which is a shame, because most Ariston faults come down to the same handful of causes as any other combi. Common Ariston faults and error codes
- 501 — ignition failure: the boiler tried to light and no flame was detected. Can be a gas supply issue, an ignition component, or a flame-sensing fault.
- 108 — low system pressure. Check the gauge; if it's below 1 bar, topping up via the filling loop to around 1.2–1.5 bar may resolve it. If it keeps dropping, see our losing pressure guide.
- 104 / 105 — circulation faults: water isn't moving around the system properly, which can point to a pump problem, an airlock, or a blockage from sludge and scale.
Only try a single reset per your manual. If a code returns after one reset, repeated resetting isn't a fix — it just masks a fault that needs finding. For other brands' codes, see our error codes page.
A real Ariston repair, not a claim
In Stourbridge (DY8), we diagnosed an Ariston Evo combi that had stopped producing hot water reliably. The cause was a blocked plate heat exchanger — sludge and scale had restricted flow so badly the boiler couldn't transfer heat to the hot water circuit properly. Diagnosed, replaced, back to normal. What an Ariston diagnosis involves
The £99 diagnosis covers the first hour of work. The engineer checks the basics first — pressure, power, gas supply — then works through the fault methodically: reading the error history, testing the components the symptoms point to, and confirming the actual cause rather than guessing from the code alone. The same code can have several different causes, which is why swapping parts on spec is a poor way to fix a boiler.
If a part is needed, it's quoted clearly before anything is fitted, and most repairs carry a 12-month parts warranty. Because the van carries the most commonly needed spares, 88% of our repairs are finished on the first visit — measured across 505 repairs since October 2023.
