Typical lifespan
Most modern gas combi boilers are built to last around 10–15 years with reasonable care. Some run well beyond that; others develop recurring issues earlier. The manufacturer's design life is only part of the story — how the system's maintained matters just as much.
What shortens a boiler's life
- No annual servicing. An unserviced boiler is more likely to run inefficiently and develop faults that get missed early.
- Sludge and scale build-up. This is exactly what caused the fault in our Stourbridge case study — internal debris restricting flow and forcing the boiler to overheat.
- Hard water areas without a filter. Scale build-up happens faster without a magnetic filter fitted.
- Ignoring small faults. A minor issue left unaddressed can develop into something that damages other components.
What extends it
- Annual servicing — from £95, see our boiler repair page for full pricing
- A magnetic filter, which catches debris before it reaches the heat exchanger
- Addressing pressure loss or noises promptly rather than waiting
